Ocean Race Europe 2025: Munimar at the Alkor

The Ocean Race Europe 2025 officially kicked off in Kiel, with over 2,000 visitors participating in the Open Ship event on the Alkor. The event provided valuable insights into maritime safety, with a special focus on the risks associated with munitions in the sea. Discussions also highlighted the ongoing efforts of GEOMAR and Munimar, the Centre for the Management of Munitions in the Marine Environment.

The engagement and enthusiasm from visitors contributed to meaningful conversations on this critical topic, driving forward research and awareness. Munimar looks forward to continued collaboration and dialogue to promote safety and sustainability in the marine environment.

Federal Research Minister Dorothee Bär visits GEOMAR and learns about MUNIMAR

On the occasion of the start of the Ocean Race Europe, the Federal Minister for Research, Technology, and Space, Dorothee Bär, visited the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel on Sunday, August 10, 2025. It was one of the first research institutions the minister had visited since taking office.

During her visit, Minister Bär learned about current research projects and technologies in the field of marine research. Among other things, Dr. Aaron Beck presented the work of MUNIMAR – Center for Management of Munitions in the Marine Environment and explained modern mapping techniques and the ecological impact of sunken munitions.

GEOMAR is institutionally supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (90%) and the state of Schleswig-Holstein (10%).
