MUNIMAR at Meermachen SH!
At the second Meermachen SH, Zukunftsdialog, held last Friday, 28 November 2025, at the IHK Kiel, experts from the maritime industry, government, and marine research institutions came together to discuss the key challenges shaping the future of the maritime sector. One of the important topics of the event was munitions in the sea, a growing environmental and safety concern for the Baltic Sea region and beyond.
Alexander Bach (MEKUN) provided valuable insights into the issue of sea-dumped munitions and presented the mission of MUNIMAR, the Centre for Management of Munitions in the Marine Environment.
Dr. Samar Ensenbach (GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research) showcased two posters highlighting ongoing EU-funded research on sea-dumped munitions and the prioritization of munitions dump sites in the Baltic Sea, in CONMAR project, aiming to improve our understanding of the environmental and ecological risks posed by historical munitions and support evidence-based mitigation strategies.
The session demonstrated the crucial role of scientific expertise in tackling pressing environmental challenges and emphasized the importance of close collaboration between research, industry, and policy stakeholders. A special thank you goes to IHK Schleswig-Holstein, for organizing this insightful and forward-looking event. More info on: https://meermachen.sh/
